‘Individually we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean’.

The Collaborative Australian Postgraduate Sea Training Alliance Network is a post-graduate at sea training initiative on the RV Investigator. Governed by a network of leading industry and university partners from within marine science and geoscience, CAPSTAN is a first of its kind programme which will transform the way marine science education is delivered for generations to come.

A truly national education initiative, CAPSTAN was designed to develop a national approach to teaching and learning in the marine sciences whilst also providing a platform for institutional, industrial and generational knowledge transfer and collaboration on-board Australia’s principal research vessel, RV Investigator.

In 2017-2019, the Marine National Facility (MNF) generously provided the CAPSTAN programme with Investigator ship time and access to on-board equipment for 3 pilot voyages for up to 30 post-graduate students and trainers.

The CAPSTAN programme will change the landscape of marine science education in Australia. With your support, the sky, or more accurately, the Pacific’s Marian Trench is the limit!

Open in late October 2018: Trainer and Student Applications for the second CAPSTAN training voyage.

The second Collaborative Australian Postgraduate Sea Training Alliance Network (CAPSTAN) programme voyage is scheduled to depart from Hobart, Tasmania 29th April, arriving in Fremantle, Western Australia, 9th May, 2018. More details will be posted on the For Academics or via the For Students page as will the revised link to the 2018 application form.

Applications for the 1st 2017 voyage are closed and both trainer and student applicant have been notified of the outcome.
